Friday Literacy Fun
Fridays we have a chance to come together and share reading and writing with each other in numerous ways. Most of these activities offer the children the opportunity to work on speaking and listening skills--two key components of a balanced language arts program.
Book Sharing--2-3 students will present the project they have been working on at home, which is based on their independent reading book. After a student has presented their project, the other students can ask the presenter questions about their book.
During the first quarter, we will practice presentation skills such as volume, rate, vocal variety, eye contact and posture by using poems, readings for Mass, announcements (pledge & prayer) or free talks. We will also brainstorm good questions to ask during a book discussion and hang them up in the room.
Newscast—the news team of the week will record their stories that they wrote in writer’s workshop earlier in the week. Once the whole class has recorded a news story (5 week rotation), I will publish the broadcast on my website.
Spelling Quiz-- We will do a final practice first and then take the quiz.
Weekly Reader--While the news team is recording the news, the rest of the students will read the Weekly Reader.
Read Aloud--The Student of the Week will be able to share a favorite book with us!
